General characteristics:

APPLE TREE (Malus) is a tree of rose family numbering about 35 species. It gives probably the main part of the global production of edible fruit. Homeland of apple is the northern temperate zone. Apple trees have a boughy crown generally standing  2,5-15 m tall. The size of the red, green or yellow spherical fruits depends on the cultivar and can be of a pea size or reach more than 10 cm in diameter. Most modern varieties of fruit (often isolated as a separate type of apple commonly known as Malus domestica) originate from wild species of dwarf apple (M. pumila) and Malus baccata, or Siberian crabapple (M. baccata)  both of which have been cultivated since ancient times. The charred remains of apple trees were found during excavations of prehistoric sites around a lake area in Switzerland. Apple timber is very heavy, hard and moderately strong.

Domesticated apple is a perennial plant (up to 100 years, wild species - up to 300 years). It begins to bear fruit (depending on the cultivar and conditions) between 4-12-th year, the production period  is 40-50 years. Fruiting is at the ends of short branches (fruit twigs). Blooms early, approximately in April and May. Flowering bloom for 8-12 days. Cross pollination. With abundant flowering about 30% of the ovaries are fastened to the ripe fruit, the rest fall off. Apple is winterhardy and frosthardy (can withstand up to -42 ° C), it grows in different soil. Lack of moisture, mineral nutrition and other adverse factors lead to a significant ovaries fall.
