Wild progenitor of the common garlic is “wild garlic” or “crow garlic” now growing in Central Asia. From country of its origin garlic came to Chime by caravan roads and later was introduced to Europe via Kazakhstan, India, the Near East and Egypt, then - in ancient Greece and Rome. Into Slavic countries garlic was brought from Byzantium presumably in 9-10 centuries.

Common garlic or Allium sativum is a bulbous plant. It grows up to 1.2 m in height. There 17 trace elements found in garlic. It is rich in iodine, mineral substances sodium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper, cobalt and other elements. In its chemical content potassium (260 mg) and phosphorus (140 mg) predominate. It contains such vitamins as C, B1, B2, PP, A, B9, carotene et al., minerals, essential oils. Garlic excels all other vegetables in thiamine content.

Garlic is exceptionally rich in phytonsids which have antibacterial properties. It contains small quantity of  ascorbic acid, but large ammounts of pyridoxine. Garlic increases the body's resistance to colds, has anti-microbial and minor analgesic effect, improves the heart and kidneys functioning, digestive act. It reduces blood sugar level, it is recommended in the treatment of atherosclerosis and hypertension. Externally it is used to treat septic wounds, burns, trophic ulcers.

Garlic juice diluted in water is used in the treatment of vernal conjunctivitis, diseases of the middle ear.

It is believed that garlic not only increases the potency, but also aids in treatment of eczema, toothache and bites of poisonous snakes. Garlic helpsto reduce cholesterol level and thus reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Raw garlic is a powerful antibiotic. There is evidence that it has a positive effect in cancer, stroke treatment, and increases digestibility of vitamins.

Garlic gets the appetite up. The use of garlic makes the blood vessel walls more elastic, and regulates blood pressure. Garlic contains flavonoids - substances relaxing vascular spasms and helping to eliminate cholesterol from the body. The garlic infusion is used to treat hypertension and atherosclerosis.

It is known that garlic helps the digestive and excretory system of the body. Garlic comes to rescue in the case of the weakened kidney function, poor blood circulation, tumor, urolithiasis. Currently, we can say that garlic has a vasohypotonic, bile-expelling means. It helps the body to resist infection processes, including cough, respiratory disease and even tuberculosis. Garlic contributes to the development of normal muscle flora, destroying abnormal one. Garlic kills tapeworms, pinworms, and other internal parasites living in the human body. It gives a person strength, gives energy. Garlic stimulates gastric juice secretion, thereby improving digestion. Garlic improves eyesight, increases male potency; counteracts varicose veins, has anti-sclerotic effect, is used for the prevention of hypertension, chronic bronchitis, and improves metabolism and rejuvenates the whole body.

Garlic is not recommended for chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, liver diseases, kidney, urinary tract treatment.
